Brooklyn NY: Jamaica Bobsled Team 2018 and Manager, Devon Harris, originalmember of the 1988 Winter Olympic, will be at Brooklyn Borough Hallfor the launch of WORD! A Caribbean Lit Fest, Friday, June 9, 2017, starting at 4:00 PM. As improbable as the notion of a tropical island fielding a team for Winter Olympics is, so is having that Bobsled in Downtown Brooklyn at Borough Hall. But it’s happening.
What does a Bobsled have to do with books and reading you ask? WORD! A Caribbean Lit Fest specifically spotlights the offering of Caribbean Diaspora Writers and their perspectives to childhood via storytelling. From this collective of authors emerges various Caribbean immigrantnarratives built out to support young readers experience with books and text. Devon Harrison is himself an author. In "Keep pushing" he share his story of resilience and audacity.
The Bobsled appearance supports the kickoff of WORD! highlighting the great need for exposure and exploration that foster cultural diversity through books for young readers around New York City. WORD! mission is to bring together families and children to help spark an interest that increases reading. The objective toimpact individuals, families and communities give great social opportunities to an underserved population. This effort joins Collaborators, Writersand Residents together and emanate the potency of partnerships around common causes that unlock and unleash promises.
Since the days when the team gained fame from its debut in the 1988 Winter Olympic, the island of Jamaica has had teams returning to participate in this international winter game. The 2018 Winter Olympics team consisting of men as well as women competitors, will be present at Brooklyn Borough Hall.
Launched in 2013 WORD! efforts offers an afternoon to evening of readings, storytelling, and discussionfor children and families. Programmed in June celebrating the rich literary traditions emanating from the Caribbean, this eventis also an observance of Caribbean American Heritage Month .
WORD! A Caribbean Lit Fest ispresented in association with Restoration Arts at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY on Sunday, June 11 from 12:00 to 7:00pm. The Jamaica Bobsled Team appearance at Brooklyn a Borough Hall and presentation of WORD! is being made possible in partnership with Blue Mango LLC and Tower Isles Foods under the patronage of the esteemedBorough President of Brooklyn, Eric L.
